Bated Breath's dam Tantina has been highly successful both as a racemare and as a broodmare, despite both of these careers sadly being cut short. She won her first four starts (all at 7f) by an average of over three lengths including twice in Listed company, the last of which was an impressive five-length defeat of subsequent multiple Group 2 winner Chic. Unfortunately Tantina suffered a career-ending injury when an odds-on favourite in the Gr.3 Supreme Stakes, leaving the distinct feeling that her full ability had not been revealed. Despite this, she still attained a Timeform rating of 115 and retired to stud as a highly-promising broodmare prospect.
Tantina made a very good start with her first foal, the Daylami filly Scuffle, who raced over three seasons, attaining blacktype and achieving a Timeform rating of 106. One of her best performances was a defeat of the subsequent Group 2 winner Crystal Capella as a three-year-old. Scuffle has made an incredibly strong start to her broodmare career, producing six winners from her first six runners, four of which are stakes horses, headed by the 2019 St Leger winner Logician. Tantina’s next two foals, Cityscape (by Selkirk) and Bated Breath (by Dansili), really illustrated her merit as a broodmare. Cityscape’s career spanned 23 races, and the easily recognisable chestnut only finished out of the frame on four occasions. His impressive victory in the Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free at Meydan was just reward for his consistency at the top level at 8 to 10f. Bated Breath was equally consistent in Group 1 company – but instead in the sprinting division. Cityscape and Bated Breath were rated 126 and 125 respectively by Timeform. On top this, Tarentaise, an unraced Oasis Dream daughter of Tantina, produced Group 2-winning and Group 1-placed sprinter Equilateral from her first foal to hit the track.
Not many broodmares are capable of producing three blacktype performers from their first three foals, but then not many broodmares come from such a strong female line as Tantina. Her fourth dam is the legendary Best In Show – whose descendants include such equine luminaries as El Gran Senor, Redoute’s Choice, Rags To Riches, Aldebaran, Peeping Fawn and Spinning World. Tantina’s third dam Monroe herself produced four stakes winners – headed by the Champion Two-Year-Old Xaar – and her daughters have produced stakes winners in England, France, America and Australia. This is also the family of 2014 Eclipse Award winner Close Hatches, as well as 2015 Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Ajaya.

Dansili is recognised as one of the best stallions of the modern era. By the breed-shaping sire Danehill, out of the five-time Group/Grade 1 producing Juddmonte mare Hasili; despite standing his first season for just £8,000. His reputation has been made on being able to upgrade his mares and produce talented and tough winners at a variety of distances and ages – from outstanding middle-distance horses such as Harbinger and The Fugue to speedy Group-winning two-year-olds like Zoffany and Just Wonderful.
Dansili has sired 23 individual Group/Grade 1 winners of 38 Group/Grade 1 races and has produced 12% stakes winners to runners (lifetime) – a phenomenal achievement, especially considering the quality of mares he covered in his first six seasons at stud, a period which he stood at a high of £12,500. His stallion sons to have runners have already produced Group 1/Classic winners. Zoffany made a brilliant start to his stud career – siring three Royal Ascot winners from his first crop on the way to earning the Champion First Season Sire title in 2015 and in 2018 was the second leading European sire by two-year-old stakes winners. Harbinger has established himself amongst Japan’s best - and his Group 1 winners include the top-class filly Deirdre.
In total, eight sons of Dansili have sired Group 1 winners, including Bated Breath.

Speed, toughness, consistency and class are some of the most sought-after traits in both racehorses and stallions – and Bated Breath can lay claim to them all. He had the speed to break the track record when winning the Gr.2 Temple Stakes at Haydock. His toughness and consistency are illustrated by a race career that yielded six wins and seven in-the-frame finishes from 18 career starts. The fact that he has beaten 18 individual Group 1 winners of 35 Group 1 race highlights his class, as does his Timeform rating of 125.
Bated Breath was one of the highest-rated yearlings of his generation at Juddmonte – and showed lots of ability at Roger Charlton’s as a two-year-old. A minor setback meant he failed to make the racetrack as a juvenile – but he made up for it in no uncertain fashion the following season, winning his first three races with ease. Timeform rated him 112p, and made specific reference to his 'sharp turn of foot'.
The progression of Bated Breath as a four-year-old, although expected, was impressive nonetheless. Defeats by a combined total of under a length in three Group 1 races - finishing a nose behind Dream Ahead in the Haydock Sprint Cup after being beaten half a length by the same horse in the July Cup, and then travelling to Canada where he was beaten just a neck in the Nearctic Stakes, despite being forced wide, showed him to be a true Group 1 horse. A Timeform rating of 125 meant he was rated higher than other top sprinters and highly successful sires Invincible Spirit, Pivotal and Acclamation. This rating was repeated in 2012 when the aforementioned record-breaking victory in the Temple Stakes and his narrow defeat in the King’s Stand Stakes confirmed Bated Breath's position amongst the top European sprinters.
Bated Breath, like his sire Dansili, may not have a Group 1 win on his CV – but like his outstanding sire, he was a Group 1 winner in all but name.

Bated Breath

Out of a mare, Suelita, who is becoming something of a blue hen for the Harper family’s Whitsbury Manor Stud, Chaldean belongs to a line once cultivated to great effect by Gerald Leigh.
Leigh bought into the line when purchasing Cambretta, a Roberto granddaughter of 1957 Dewhurst Stakes winner Torbella, from Robert Sangster in 1978. He went on to breed the Group 3 winners Pluralisme and Only out of the mare before selling her at the 1982 Keeneland November Sale for $1 million to the Maktoum family’s Aston Upthorpe Stud. Among the foals Cambretta left behind for Leigh was the winning Icecapade filly Ghislaine, and it is that mare who has gone on to forge the most powerful branch of the Cambretta line, initially dam of the top miler Markofdistinction. Today, over 30 stakes winners descend from her including Australian champion two-year-old Pierro, now a highly successful stallion for Coolmore Australia.
Chaldean’s dam Suelita, who descends from Ghislaine via the Listed-placed Ahead (by Shirley Heights) and her Listed-winning daughter Horatia (by Machiavellian), has done plenty to add to that total. Inbred 3x3 to Machiavellian, a pattern that she shares with leading sire Lope De Vega among others, the daughter of Dutch Art is the dam of five stakes horses from just six foals of racing age, namely sprint Listed scorer The Broghie Man (by Cityscape), the Listed-placed Gloves Lynch (by Mukhadram), Mill Reef Stakes winner Alkumait (by Showcasing; now at stud in Ireland), this season’s Listed winning and Group 1-placed sprinter Get Ahead (by Showcasing) and Chaldean.
Waiting in the wings for the mare is a 2022 Kingman filly, who topped the 2022 Tattersalls December Foal Sale when sold to Juddmonte Farms for 1,000,000gns.

Widely regarded as the best European racehorse of the modern era, Frankel’s unbeaten stretch of 14 races, ten of them at Group 1 level, was the longest seen in Europe since Ribot, foaled in 1952. A Champion two-year-old who became to be as equally dominant over mile and a quarter as he was over a mile, he was awarded a Timeform rating of 147, the highest in the organisation’s history. “He’s the best I’ve ever had and the best I’ve ever seen, I’d be very surprised if there’s ever been better,” commented his trainer Sir Henry Cecil.
When it comes to a second career at stud, however, such brilliance can lead to inflated expectations. Yet ten years on from his retirement to Banstead Manor Stud, Frankel has answered every question asked of him in that department, his reputation as a consistent source of Group 1 talent over a range of distances, ages and conditions firmly underlined by his place as a champion sire of Britain and Ireland.
In 2021, Frankel became the first British-based sire to be crowned the champion of Britain and Ireland in 24 years, when Mill Reef posthumously led the standings, thereby breaking the domination of his late sire Galileo, the 12-time champion. He was also Europe’s leading sire that year, and as it stands, he will repeat the trick in 2023 with a collection of 30 European stakes winners - more than any other sire - contributing to another outstanding season.
Chaldean, as winner of the 2,000 Guineas, played an extremely important role in Frankel’s year. Overall, his progeny won 14 Group/Grade 1 races in 2023 ranging from two-year-old Ylang Ylang in the Fillies’ Mile to three-year-old Soul Sister, winner of the Oaks. French three-year-olds Kelina and Jannah Rose also struck in the 7f Prix de la Foret and 1m2f Prix Saint-Alary while the accomplished older horses Inspiral, Mostahdaf, Westover, Nashwa and Courage Mon Ami collectively turned in sparkling performances from a mile to extended distances. It’s a powerful collection of horses and one that complements his overall record which currently consists of 124 stakes winners, among them 33 Group/Grade 1 scorers including the British Classic winners Chaldean, Adayar, Anapurna, Soul Sister, Logician and Hurricane Lane.
Therein lies a snapshot of Frankel as a sire; not only is he a regular contributor of class, as illustrated by his 13% black-type winners to foals of racing age ratio, but his progeny tend to be tough, versatile and sound. They can be excellent at two, as illustrated in recent seasons by Chaldean, Inspiral and Ylang Ylang, but many of them also possess the constitution to hold their form as time goes on. There is perhaps no better example of that than Kirsten Racing’s exceptional mare Alpinista, whose unbeaten run of six Group 1 victories was capped by the 2022 Arc.
Now the next chapter is being written as various sons of Frankel head to stud. One of the first, dual Champion Stakes winner Cracksman, couldn’t have made a better start as the sire of unbeaten Arc hero Ace Impact out of his first crop, something that should bode well for the future prospects of Frankel’s other sire sons.

One of the top lots of the 2020 Tattersalls December Foal Sale when bought for 550,000gns by Juddmonte, Chaldean was sent to Andrew Balding and came to hand early for the Kingsclere trainer to break his maiden over 7f at Newbury in July of his two-year-old year.
The Racing Post commented following that performance that he looked to possess ‘plenty of natural speed’ and that attribute was again on show next time out when he stepped up in class to take the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York.
From there, he went to Doncaster where he turned in another impressive performance to win the Group 2 Champagne Stakes by a wide margin. The authority of that win suggested that Chaldean was well worth his place in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket and partnered by Frankie Dettori, he justified those hopes with a brave front-running victory.
It was a juvenile season that not only demonstrated his abundant talent but also his pace, tough constitution and versatility (equally effective on good and soft ground), all of which came to the fore again the following spring when he overcame difficult conditions to land his second Group 1 in the 2,000 Guineas. As a May 10 foal, it is worth remembering that Chaldean hadn’t turned three when he won that day in Newmarket; indeed, he is the youngest winner of the 2,000 Guineas since Rodrigo De Triano in 1992.
Chaldean wasn’t disgraced on his next start when second to Paddington in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Although he didn’t win again in two subsequent starts, his highly accomplished juvenile career and victory in the 2,000 Guineas marked him down as a miler of elite class with the honesty and durability to go with it, all attributes that should stand him in very good stead at stud.

Juddmonte have had three broodmares who produced three Group winners from their first three foals – the first two to achieve the feat were Hasili and Toussaud. Not only did these mares go on to be awarded Broodmare Of The Year – they have also had stallion sons who sired Group/Grade 1 winners (Dansili, Cacique and Champs Elysees for Hasili; Empire Maker and Chester House for Toussaud). The third mare is Kind - the dam of Frankel.
Kind’s first foal was the Sadler’s Wells colt Bullet Train, winner of the Gr.3 Lingfield Derby Trial but more famously known as the pacemaker for Frankel. He started his stud career in Kentucky, as has Noble Mission, who memorably became a triple Group 1 winner in 2014 and has now sired multiple Grade 1 winner Code of Honor from his first crop. Kind’s fourth son to stand at stud is the Oasis Dream colt Morpheus, while her 2013 son Proconsul is also now a stallion - maintaining Kind's record of having all her sons standing at stud.
Kind’s only fillies to date are three-year-old Chiasma (by Galileo) and the dual Listed winner and multiple Group-placed Joyeuse (by Oasis Dream) - who retired to stud in 2015. Her first three foals, Jubiloso, Jovial and Maximal, are all winners and stakes performers. Her fourth foal Badge (2019) was a runner-up on his only start as a two-year-old. Her final foal is the 2021 Kingman colt Kikkuli, who is in training with the Charltons at Beckhampton – the place where not only Kind, but also Rockfest, the foundation mare of the family, were trained.
Kind’s only daughters are the winning Galileo filly Chiasma (whose first foal is a Dubawi filly born in 2023) and the dual Listed winner and multiple Group-placed Joyeuse (by Oasis Dream) - who retired to stud in 2015. Her first six foals are all winners and four of them, Jubiloso, Jovial, Maximal and Array, are all stakes performers.
Kind was a very talented sprinter who liked to race prominently. A six-time winner, including twice in Listed company, her speed could have been predicted from her strong physique but arguably not from her pedigree. Although she is by Danehill, her dam Rainbow Lake won the Lancashire Oaks over a mile and a half. A daughter of Rainbow Quest, Rainbow Lake had already produced the dual Group 1 winner Powerscourt the year before Kind was born, and subsequently the Group winners Last Train and Riposte. Rainbow Lake’s dam Rockfest was introduced into the Juddmonte broodmare band in 1983 – 30 years prior to Frankel, a third generation homebred, embarking on his own stud career.

Galileo well and truly established himself as the pre-eminent sire in the world. He produced at least two Group 1 winners and at least one Classic winner in each of his first 16 crops to race. He was the champion sire in Europe 12 times and 11 consecutively between 2010 - 2020, with his most successful crop to date being the one born in 2008. This group included nine individual winners at the highest level (five of which won Classics), headed by Frankel.
As a Derby-winning son of the legendary Sadler’s Wells and the Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea, Galileo had all of the elements to succeed. Since retiring to stud, his pedigree has received a major boost through the exploits of three Group 1-winning full/half-siblings, most notably the truly outstanding racehorse and leading sire Sea The Stars.
Galileo has already made a name for himself as a sire of sires with the number of his sons having produced Group winners into double figures. Two of these, the Gr.1 Dewhurst winners New Approach and Teofilo, both got off to the best possible start by siring two-year-old Group 1 winners and Classic winners in their first crops. Galileo’s other Dewhurst winner to have runners is none other than Frankel – who repeated the feat of having a Group 1 winning two-year-old and a Classic winner in his first crop. Frankel was the champion sire in Europe in 2021, establishing himself as the leading stallion son of Galileo despite only having six crops of racing age.

Some racehorses have moments of brilliance - Frankel was consistently brilliant. He is the only horse to have run to a Timeform rating in the 140’s seven times (recording the highest ever Timeform rating of 147). He is also the only horse to run to an official rating of 140 twice and is the highest rated horse since the International Classifications began. In an unbeaten career he was champion at two, three and four years of age (the only horse to achieve this feat unbeaten) – in the process setting a record for consecutive European Group 1 wins – and beating 23 individual Group/Grade 1 winners of 50 Group/Grade races by a cumulative winning distance of over 76 lengths.
There were many jaw-dropping moments in Frankel's career – his majestic 10-length victory in the Gr.2 Royal Lodge Stakes at two years; the raw power and exuberance of his front-running display in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas; his complete annihilation of the opposition in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes; his effortless step up to 10½ furlongs in front of an appreciative Yorkshire crowd in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International; the sense of overwhelming happiness and relief tinged with sadness when he made his triumphant final start at Ascot in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes.
From soft ground to good to firm; over distances ranging from seven to 10½ furlongs; aged two, three and four – Frankel's long stride and outstanding natural ability carried him effortlessly through his racing career. As Tony Morris so eloquently writes, Frankel is: “The greatest horse most of us have seen, or will ever see… I’ve never known another horse with such a high cruising speed and the capacity to sustain maximum velocity for so long. He is a phenomenon.”

Details of Kingman's extended female line can be found on Oasis Dream's page, so his first dam Zenda will be the focus here. She became Zamindar's first Group 1 winner, and the first of three Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winners for her sire, when graduating from a Windsor maiden victory to success in the French 1000 Guineas. Narrow defeats in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland plus a victory in an Allowance at Saratoga followed – as did the exploits of her year-younger half-brother Oasis Dream. As a Classic-winning half-sister to a multiple Group 1 winner Zenda was a rare and valuable commodity when she retired to stud.
Although her early broodmare career failed to live up to the high hopes, signs of Zenda’s potential were revealed with the emergence of her talented Dansili filly Panzanella, a wide-margin maiden winner who achieved a Timeform rating of 94. Better was to come in the shape of the Dansili colt Remote (TF 119), who put together a three-race winning streak culminating in a victory in the Gr.3 Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot. Nine days after this victory, Kingman (TF 133) made his highly-anticipated debut at Newmarket, leaving no one in doubt that they had seen a very special colt.
Zenda has since produced a third blacktype performer – the Frankel colt First Eleven, who was very unlucky not to become his dam’s third Royal Ascot winner when third in the King George V Stakes. He secured blacktype in the Gr.3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes however. Both Remote and First Eleven have now started their stud careers in Argentina and Spain respectively.
Zenda also produced the talented five-year-old Sunray Major (Dubawi) who has achieved a Timeform rating of 114p. She sadly died in 2019 at the age of 20. The aforementioned Panzanella has produced four winners from four runners. Another daughter of Zenda in the broodmare band is the winning Bated Breath filly Present Tense.

Kingman's grandsire Green Desert is discussed on Oasis Dream's page. Needless to say he has proven to be a very influential sire of sires through the likes of Oasis Dream, Cape Cross and Invincible Spirit. His grandsons are also making their mark at stud – Sea The Stars and Showcasing are amongst the leading sires in Europe.
Invincible Spirit is also being ably represented by his stallion sons. Australian Group 3 winner I Am Invincible, who was second to Takeover Target in a 6f Group 1 contest, has quickly established himself as one of the leading sires in the Southern Hemisphere. He was the leading first season sire in Australia in 2013-14 and in 2018-19 made history by siring a record 28 Australian stakes winners in a single season, including four Group 1 winners. To date Invincible Spirit’s sons have sired over 200 stakes winners - but none have made a better start than Kingman.
Invincible Spirit is very similar in many ways to Kingman's “uncle” Oasis Dream. They are both sprinting sons of Green Desert who have staying influences in their pedigrees. Invincible Spirit is a son of the 1990 Prix de Diane winner Rafha – whose outstanding stud career produced seven blacktype performers in total including leading sire Kodiac, and the dam of Group 1-winning two-year-old Nayarra. As with Oasis Dream, Invincible Spirit has proven himself to be not only a world-class stallion, but also an extremely versatile one, siring Group 1 winners at distances from 5 to 10½f. Some of his stars include the outstanding Moonlight Cloud, Classic winners Magna Grecia and Lawman, top miler Charm Spirit, leading two-year-olds Shalaa and National Defense and the high-class sprinters Mayson, Fleeting Spirit, Profitable and Signs Of Blessing – but Kingman has achieved the highest Timeform rating of any of Invincible Spirit’s progeny.

On his retirement, Kingman was described by the usually restrained John Gosden as “A long way the most exciting colt I have ever trained.” This glowing description is a testament to the impact that the colt made while he was racing – a career which was defined by a most potent turn of foot. Kingman was unlucky not to have an unbeaten record – with the splitting field arguably the reason for his defeat in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas by a horse who had been 4½ lengths behind him in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes. That day at Newmarket in May was soon forgotten as emphatic victories in the Gr.1 Irish 2000 Guineas, Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes, Gr.1 Sussex Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois followed. The Irish Guineas was a demolition exercise – with daylight between Kingman and his pursuers. Royal Ascot saw an equally easy victory – with Newmarket form reversed with Night Of Thunder. In the Sussex and Prix Jacques Le Marois Kingman put the best milers of the older generation to the sword – multiple Group 1 winners Toronado and Olympic Glory having no answer to the acceleration of the outstanding three-year-old.
Kingman's two-year-old career had given more than hint of what he might be able to achieve in the future. His debut victory at Newmarket was so impressive, both visually and on the clock, that he was as low as 5/1 for the Guineas afterwards and an equally convincing win in the Gr.3 Solario Stakes marked Kingman down as a colt of limitless potential. His three-year-old career confirmed Kingman as one of the best racehorses of recent times – possessing a turn of foot rarely seen. This innate talent, coupled with his outstanding bloodlines, made Kingman a highly exciting stallion prospect.

For all the brilliant families associated with Juddmonte, none are probably quite so powerful as that belonging to Lead Artist’s great-granddam Hasili.
The Kahyasi mare was a true blue hen as the dam of five Gr.1 winners for Prince Khalid Abdullah, a record unsurpassed in the modern era. And while a Gr.1 win eluded her excellent son Dansili, he was thoroughly deserving of one, as his Timeform rating of 127 attests.
Hasili was a tough race filly in a 17-race career for Henri-Alex Pantall, winning the Listed Prix des Sablonnets at Nantes in November 1993. Durable with a touch of class - Hasili had every right to become a successful broodmare but what came next was extraordinary.
Multiple visits to Danehill were the backbone of her success, yielding Dansili, Banks Hill, Cacique, Intercontinental and Champs Elysees.
Dansili, her first foal, won the Gr.2 Prix du Muguet for Andre Fabre but was Gr.1-placed on six occasions notably when narrowly beaten in the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes by Giant’s Causeway.
Hasili’s second foal, Champion Banks Hill, won the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes, Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly &amp; Mare Turf and Gr.1 Prix Jacques le Marois. Several years later, her younger sister Intercontinental emulated Banks Hill by winning the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly &amp; Mare Turf.
Later visits to Danehill yielded two further top-class colts in Cacique and Champs Elysees; Cacique won the Gr.1 Man O’War Stakes and Gr.1 Manhattan Handicap while Champs Elysees struck in the Gr.1 Canadian International, Gr.1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes and Gr.1 Hollywood Turf Cup.
Hasili also clicked with Green Desert to produce another Gr.1 winner in Heat Haze, successful in the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes and Gr.1 Matriarch Stakes, while in later years she produced the Gr.3 winner Deluxe to Storm Cat.
In all, her progeny won or were placed in 43 Gr.1 races.
Remarkably, each of Hasili’s sons to stud developed into Gr.1 sires. That is especially true of Dansili, a leading sire who became an extremely important element to Juddmonte’s ongoing success, not only as the sire of 24 Gr.1 winners but in his role as elite broodmare sire and influential sire of sires - Juddmonte’s own Bated Breath being a case in point.
Between them, Dansili, Cacique and Champs Elysees were responsible for 32 Gr.1 winners.
Lead Artist descends from Hasili via her Oasis Dream daughter Responsible as a son of her first foal, Obligate. By Frankel, Obligate won three races for Pascal Bary including the Gr.2 Prix de Sandringham over a mile at Chantilly. Lead Artist is her first foal.
Lead Artist is bred on a variation of the highly successful Dubawi - Galileo cross. Night Of Thunder is one example, as is multiple Gr.1 winner Ghaiyyath. It is also worth noting that Zarak’s outstanding dam Zarkava is a granddaughter of Kahyasi, who also appears in the background of Lead Artist as the sire of Hasili.

Dubawi was an unbeaten Gr.1-winning two-year-old and Classic miling talent. When he retired to stand for Darley in 2006, he had already done plenty to enhance the legacy of his short-lived sire Dubai Millennium, who left behind a single crop of just 56 foals. Dubawi, as winner of the Gr.1 National Stakes at two and Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and Gr.1 Prix Jacques le Marois at three, went some way on the track to alleviating the repercussions of that loss. What he has since achieved at stud, however, means that the sire line, which represents the Seeking The Gold branch of Mr Prospector, is today an extremely powerful force across the globe.
Dubawi’s stud record showcases a sire who is often an influence for durability as well as class and versatility. There have been the Gr.1 milers Night Of Thunder, Modern Games, Makfi, Coroebus and Notable Speech, top sprinters such as Creative Force and Naval Crown, two-year-olds of the ilk of Henry Longfellow, Ancient Wisdom and Quorto, plus high-class older horses such as Ghaiyyath, Lord North and Rebel’s Romance.
Crucially, a number of Dubawi’s sons have gone on to become important sires in their own right.
Night Of Thunder is on an upward trajectory as the sire of close to 80 stakes winners, among them 2025 Gr.1 winners Desert Flower, Ombudsman, Dynamic Pricing and Choisya. Zarak has already sired close to 35 stakes winners, 21 of them at Group/Graded stakes level, despite not standing for more than €25,000 until 2023. Too Darn Hot’s successful start is headed by the European Gr.1 winners Fallen Angel, Hotazhell and Tornado Alert while Space Blues is the sire of Gr.1-winning 2yo Power Blues in his first crop. New Bay also has three Gr.1 winners to his name.
It won’t escape breeders’ notice that several of those high-flying sire sons were excellent milers, among them Night Of Thunder and Too Darn Hot, all of which bodes well for the prospects of his Gr.1-winning miler son Lead Artist.

Lead Artist operated at a high level throughout his racing career to the point that nine of his 11 starts were in stakes company. It says a lot for the regard in which he was held by John and Thady Gosden that he was sent off a warm order for the Wood Ditton Maiden at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, in which he was beaten only a nose into second by First Conquest.
Lead Artist had that rival well behind him next time out when the near five-length winner of a mile novice at York, and from then on plied his trade exclusively in stakes company, mostly at a mile.
In the Gr.3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood, it was imperative that he was able to hold a good early position from his inside draw, and he did just that, bouncing out to make most of the running and ultimately win a shade cosily.
He found only the older Gr.1 winner Kinross too good in the Gr.2 Park Stakes at Doncaster but was subsequently impressive in victory over older horses in the Gr.3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket, picking up well off in a steadily run race. That win set him up for a crack at the Gr.2 Bahrain International Trophy, where he ran an excellent race to be second over a 1m2f trip that stretched his stamina, only succumbing to Spirit Dancer’s winning run in the final 50 yards. As it was, he had three Gr.1 winners well behind him that day, including the $3.8 million earner Nations Pride.
It says plenty for Lead Artist’s constitution that he was able to run such a good race in Bahrain at the end of a campaign that had begun in April. He returned at four with a Gr.1 miling campaign on his agenda and he rewarded the belief in him when winning the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May; always prominent under Oisin Murphy, he led narrowly a furlong out and although headed by the runner-up, battled back to take it up again at the line. In behind were no fewer than three Classic winners - Rosallion, Notable Speech and Fallen Angel.
Lead Artist’s performances were underpinned by an array of desirable attributes. Best over a mile, he possessed the early speed to be able to make the running if needed, as he demonstrated in the Thoroughbred Stakes, yet could also quicken off a steady pace. In a show of durability, his form never dipped during that lengthy, international three-year-old campaign. While as his Lockinge win illustrated, he was a genuine horse who was on your side in a battle. In short, Lead Artist possesses many of the attributes to be successful at stud.

The strength of Oasis Dream's female line has been amply demonstrated by the fact that he is one of three Group 1 winners to have represented his dam Hope and her sister Wemyss Bight. Hope’s half-sister Coraline has also produced the excellent Reefscape, to become the third daughter of Bahamian with a Group 1 winner to her credit. Altogether four daughters of Bahamian have produced a total of eight Group winners, so this female line has developed into one of the most potent families in the Juddmonte stud book. In total there are over 35 blacktype performers descended from the mare.
There are two very exciting young stallions to have emerged from the family in recent years with Oasis Dream's Classic-winning half-sister Zenda producing multiple Group 1 winner Kingman, and Bahamian’s granddaughter Cinnamon Bay being represented by the 2015 Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay.
Oasis Dream represents another example of Green Desert’s ability to inject speed into mares with plenty of staying influences in their pedigrees. He follows the likes of Tamarisk, whose first three dams were by Vaguely Noble, Lyphard and Hail To Reason, and Desert Prince, whose first three dams were by Bustino, Mill Reef and Relko. Seven furlongs and a mile have been the most fruitful distances for Green Desert’s progeny, but Oasis Dream is proving capable of siring anything from Group-winning two-year-old sprinters to smart stayers.
This versatility no doubt stems from the fact that Oasis Dream's first three dams were sired by the King George winners Dancing Brave, Mill Reef and Busted. Judged solely on pedigree, you would have expected Oasis Dream to have been a miler. His dam Hope was a sister to Wemyss Bight, a top-class filly who gained all of her Group wins over a minimum of 10½ furlongs. However, Wemyss Bight might have shown more speed, given the chance. Her second foal, Yaralino, won at Group 3 level over 8½ furlongs even though he was by Caerleon, a stallion whose progeny have an average winning distance of 10.7 furlongs. Then there’s Wemyss Bight’s third foal Beat Hollow, who failed by less than a length to add a Group 1 victory over a mile to his four previous Group/Grade 1 wins, even though he is by Sadler’s Wells.
Hope was every bit as effective as her sister as a broodmare. Oasis Dream is her third stakes winner from her first four foals and her second Group 1 winner, following her French 1000 Guineas winner Zenda. Oasis Dream is inbred 3 x 4 to Northern Dancer and 4 x 4 to Never Bend, while Zenda is inbred 4 x 4 to Northern Dancer.
Oasis Dream's second dam Bahamian and third dam Sorbus were accomplished performers on the track, with Timeform ratings of 115 and 121 respectively. Sorbus was speedy enough to finish second of 17 in the Gr.1 Irish 1000 Guineas on fast ground and she also crossed the line a length ahead of the Gr.1 Oaks winner Fair Salinia in the Gr.1 Irish Oaks, only to be demoted.

Green Desert’s success story dates all the way back to 1990, when he became leading first-crop sire with a very impressive total of 15 winners from 24 runners in Britain and Ireland.
Green Desert now boasts over 40 individual Group winners, including 12 Group 1 winners. It is worth pointing out that Green Desert’s totals have been achieved almost entirely with crops which numbered 71 foals at most. His Group winners include some middle-distance performers, but Green Desert’s speciality has undoubtedly been his ability to sire top-notch winners over distances at up to a mile – including top sprinters or milers from daughters of such strong influences for stamina as Bustino, Dancing Brave and Vaguely Noble.
When Oasis Dream won the Gr.1 July Cup, he was following in the footsteps not only of Green Desert but also of Green Desert’s son Owington. However, the race which best encapsulates Green Desert’s story is the Sprint Cup at Haydock, which fell to Green Desert and his sons Sheikh Albadou, Tamarisk and Invincible Spirit.
Some of these major winners didn’t have luck on their side once they retired. Tamarisk proved largely infertile at Coolmore, Owington died in the same year that he made his debut at stud and Sheikh Albadou died at the age of 11. In the circumstances, Green Desert has done very well to become recognised as a leading sire of sires, such as Oasis Dream, a top five active European sire by stakes winners, Group winners and Group 1 winners.
The other main success stories for the Green Desert sire line have been Cape Cross - who has now found everlasting fame as the sire of the exceptional colts Sea The Stars and Golden Horn and outstanding filly Ouija Board - and Invincible Spirit. Thanks to a huge number of winners, Invincible Spirit took the title of leading first-season sire and his Group 1 winners now include Moonlight Cloud (Prix Maurice de Gheest, three times, Prix du Moulin), Charm Spirit (Prix Jean Prat, Prix du Moulin and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes), Shalaa (Prix Morny, Middle Park Stakes), and Profitable (King’s Stand Stakes) as well as his highest-rated performer (according to Timeform), Kingman.
Green Desert’s influence has also extended to the other side of the world. His fast son Shinko Forest, a Group 1 winner in Japan, sired such good performers as Genki, Close To You, Electric Beat and Moss Vale from limited opportunities in Ireland. Green Desert has also made an indelible mark on Australasian racing through his first-crop sons Desert Sun and Volksraad, who retired to stud in New Zealand.

It seems that everyone was aware of Oasis Dream's considerable potential from the moment he first set foot on a racecourse, at Salisbury in August 2002. He started a clear favourite in a 12-runner maiden race but a combination of inexperience and lack of peak fitness took its toll and he finished fifth.
Oasis Dream's reputation proved to be very well founded, nonetheless. Another race was needed to bring him to top form, but he was very impressive on his third start, when he led throughout to win a 6f maiden race at Nottingham in September – impressive enough to start third favourite when he stepped up to Group 1 company in the Middle Park Stakes only 13 days later. Needless to say, he faced some very strong opposition in this historic contest. Elusive City, the favourite, had passed the post in front in both the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Morny; Tomahawk, the second favourite, had cost $2,500,000 as a yearling and was to go on to finish second in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes; Country Reel was an unbeaten winner of the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes; and Zafeen had followed his second in the Gr.1 Prix Morny with a victory in the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes. Well though they performed, none of these very smart colts was fast enough to beat Oasis Dream, who ran on strongly to win by one-and-a-half lengths in the astonishing time of 1:09.61. No horse had ever covered the 6f on the Rowley Course in less than 1:10.00; a phenomenal time, especially for a two-year-old.
The compilers of the International Classifications and the Timeform handicappers rated him their Champion Two-Year-Old, and the son of Green Desert thoroughly vindicated their assessment in 2003.
Oasis Dream made his three-year-old debut at Royal Ascot, when the Gr.2 King’s Stand Stakes was chosen in preference to the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes over an extra furlong, even though he had to carry a Group 1 penalty in the shorter event. The sensational Australian colt Choisir grabbed most of the headlines with his display of tremendous pace from start to finish but Oasis Dream also caught everyone’s eye, turning in a performance packed with promise in finishing third of 20.
From that point, Oasis Dream's career progressed along similar lines to that of his highly successful sire, Green Desert. Both contested the July Cup, the Nunthorpe and the Haydock Park Sprint Cup and both emerged with two victories and an honourable defeat before heading for the Breeders’ Cup.
Choisir started favourite to confirm the form with Oasis Dream in the Gr.1 July Cup, but Oasis Dream showed that Choisir wasn’t the only one with excellent early pace, quickly taking up a position stalking the front-running favourite before drawing away to stop the clock in a very fast time, 1:09.94.
The next stop was the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes, in which Oasis Dream started long odds on. Oasis Dream trounced his opponents in imperious style. The colt’s winning time of 56.2 seconds fell just 0.04 seconds short of the track record, and there was speculation that he might have broken the record had he been pushed harder by Richard Hughes in the closing stages.
Green Desert had finished only third in the Nunthorpe before returning to winning form in the Haydock Sprint Cup, the next race on Oasis Dream's agenda. However, whereas Green Desert encountered good ground, Oasis Dream wasn’t so fortunate. With torrential rain falling on a course which had already been watered, the ground turned good to soft which took the edge off Oasis Dream's speed. The Juddmonte colt was unfortunate that his opponents included Somnus, a soft-ground specialist. Even so, Oasis Dream accounted for his eight other rivals, including Airwave.
An unplaced effort in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile didn’t deter the compilers of the International Classifications from rating Oasis Dream the year’s top sprinter by a margin of 4lbs and the best three-year-old in Britain.

Oasis Dream

Elite Power’s dam is the prodigiously talented Broadway’s Alibi. By Seattle Slew’s undefeated Champion Two-Year-Old son, Vindication, Broadway’s Alibi won four of six starts, taking those races by a total of more than 32 lengths. Those performances included a near 17 length romp in the Forward Gal Stakes (G2), where she clocked a swift 1:21.94 for the seven furlongs, and a 3½ lengths triumph in the Comely Stakes (G3). Stretching her brilliant speed beyond a mile, Broadway’s Alibi missed by just ¾ length in a bold attempt to go wire-to-wire in the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
Broadway’s Alibi, is half-sister to the multiple graded stakes winner and stakes sire, Golden Lad; to multiple stakes winning and grade one placed R Gypsy Gold; and to the dam of stakes winner Lights of Broadway.
The second dam of Elite Power is Seeking the Gold’s juvenile stakes winning daughter, Broadway Gold, a half-sister to Dialed In, winner of the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and Florida Derby (G1), and sire of such as grade one winners Defunded, Super Stock and Get Her Number, and grade two winners Gunnevera and Ms Locust Point.
Broadway Gold’s dam, the grade two placed juvenile Miss Doolittle, is by Storm Cat out of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Eliza. An exceptional talent, Eliza not only captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), Santa Anita Oaks (G1), Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (G2) – which she took by 12 lengths – and Alcibiades Stakes (G2), but also earned second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and a third, beaten only a length in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Eliza is herself half-sister to another outstanding performer in Santa Anita Derby (G1) hero, Dinard.

Elite Power is a son of Curlin, a two-time Horse of the Year who has developed into the most important sire of classic dirt runners in North America today.
At three, Curlin established himself as the leader of a vintage generation of colts that also included Street Sense, Hard Spun and Any Given Saturday. Winner of his first three starts, including the Rebel Stakes (G3) and Arkansas Derby (G2), Curlin gained classic glory when defeating Street Sense and Hard Spun for the Preakness Stakes (G1). In addition to earning honors as Champion Three-Year-Old of that crop, Curlin earned ascendancy over the leaders of the older horse division, capturing the Jockey Gold Cup (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), defeating Champion Older Horse Lawyer Ron on both occasions.
Returning at four, Curlin garnered two more Eclipse Award titles, one as Champion Older Horse and the other for a successful defense of his Horse of the Year title. Undefeated in five starts on the dirt that term, four of them in grade one events, Curlin captured the Dubai World Cup (G1), by a record margin of 7¾ lengths; the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) by 4¼ lengths; the Woodward Stakes (G1); and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1).
A son of two-time Leading Sire Smart Strike out of a mare by two-time Leading Sire and Leading Broodmare Sire, Deputy Minister, at stud Curlin has more than lived up to his pedigree. Starting with a first crop that yielded nine stakes winners, including the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Metropolitan Handicap (G1) victor Palace Malice, Curlin has firmly established himself as North America’s most important sire of classic distance dirt performers.
Recently surpassing the 100 individual stakes winner milestone, Curlin is responsible for no less than 56 individual graded stakes winners and 22 individual grade one winners. They are headed by Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish, Champion Sprinter Elite Power, Champion Older Horse Vino Rosso, Champion Older Mare Idiomatic, Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Champion Older Mare Malathaat, Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Nest and Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Stellar Wind. His other grade one scorers include such as classic winners Palace Malice and Exaggerator, Keen Ice – conqueror of American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes (G1) – Clairiere, Connect, Global Campaign, Idol, Known Agenda, Paris Lights, Off the Tracks, and Bright Future. Curlin is also represented by Canadian Two-Year-Old and Three-Year-Old Champion Filly Curlin’s Voyage.
Curlin is now rapidly making an impact as a sire of sires. In both 2022 and 2023 the Kentucky Derby (G1) was captured by a colt from the first crop of a son of Curlin, and Curlin is already represented by 11 individual sons who have sired stakes winners, six being responsible for graded stakes winners, and four already represented by grade one winners. His son, Good Magic, is the Leading Second Season Sire of 2023, and two of his sons are among the top ten Freshman Sires of 2023.

Beginning with a nine length victory in a Churchill Downs maiden special weight event, Elite Power has demonstrated remarkable class and consistency at the highest level, over two seasons, winning eight straight races from six furlongs to a mile, and defeating the best sprinters in training.
Following his maiden win, Elite Power added two more successes in allowance company, scoring 3¼ lengths over a mile at Churchill Downs, and by 3½ lengths “eased up” over six furlongs at Saratoga. His black-type debut was no less impressive, Elite Power taking the Vosburgh Stakes (G2) by 5¾ lengths over graded stakes winner Eastern Bay, four-time graded winner Drafted and graded winner Jalen Journey despite finishing “geared down.”
Elite Power built on this explosive stakes debut, completing the season with a daylight triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), where he defeated C Z Rocket – a multiple graded stakes winner of over $2,000,000 whose resume already boasted a second in a previous Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) – reigning Champion Sprinter Jackie’s Warrior; the previous year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) hero, Aloha West; and other grade one winners American Theorem and Kimari.
In 2023, Elite Power began his title defense with a “comfortable” success in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G3), where he had 3½ lengths to spare over multiple grade one winner Gunite, with graded stakes winners Remake, Justin, Dancing Prince and Meraas further behind.
Returning to the U.S., he added the True North Stakes (G2) by 1¾ lengths under “a hand ride to the finish” with grade two winners Anarchist and Fearless in arrears.
Elite Power further advanced his claims to repeat as Champion Sprinter, courageously defeating Gunite for the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes (G1), while conceding 4 lbs. to that formidable multiple grade one winner, in the process earning a 108 Beyer Speed figure. The rest of the field, which included graded winners Dean Delivers and Little Vic, finished 6¼ or more lengths behind.
Elite Power cemented his claim to a second Eclipse Award as Champion Sprinter with a career defining performance in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita leaving the aforementioned multiple G1 winner Gunite in his wake. The balance of the field included G1 winners Speed Boat Beach, The Chosen Vron, and Dr. Schivel along with graded stakes winners Hoist the Gold (G2) and Three Technique (G2). Elite Power ran his final eighth in :11 3/5 seconds for a final time of 1:08.34. The race earned him a career best 111 Beyer Speed Figure – the fastest figure of any 2024 Breeders’ Cup runner – as well as a 0” Ragozin Sheet Figure – the best Ragozin Sheet Figure of any horse in 2024.
In conclusion, we can note that Elite Power has rare credentials as a sprinter who has delivered championship level performances over two straight seasons, and yet who claims a classic performing sire and dam.

What’s more, he’s out of a multiple graded stakes winning and classic performing mare from an outstanding family, which stems from Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Eliza.
Curlin and sons have developed a particularly strong affinity for mares from the Storm Cat line, this cross producing more than 30 stakes winners. In addition to those out of daughters of Storm Cat himself, this cross has produced grade one winner Grace Adler out of a mare by Newfoundland, and grade one winner Rattle N Roll out of a mare by Johannesburg. Johannesburg is sire of Scat Daddy, himself broodmare sire of a Curlin line graded stakes, and is a son of Hennessy, also sire of Henny Hughes– himself broodmare sire of a graded winner by a son of Curlin – and Cactus Ridge. Smart Strike, the sire of Curlin, had a tremendous success rate with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer. Curlin has followed that trend, with Champion Good Magic out of a mare by Hard Spun; a quartet of stakes winners out of daughters of Polish Numbers; grade one winner Known Agenda out of a mare by Byron (from the Danehill branch), Kentucky Derby winner Mage out of a mare by Big Brown (by Boundary) and stakes winners out of mares by Foxhound, Pine Bluff and Ascot Knight. There is a Curlin Grade two winner out of a mare by Dixieland Band and another out of a mare by that horse’s son, Dixie Union (sire of Union Rags). This line could also be sourced through High Cotton, Hook and Ladder (broodmare sire of a Curlin line stakes winner) and Overanalyze. Out of mares from the Nureyev branch of Northern Dancer, Curlin has a classic winner out of a mare by Royal Anthem and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Theatrical, and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Great Commotion. This also suggests trying daughters of Atticus, Fasliyev, Unusual Heat and Spinning World. From the sire line of Nureyev’s three-quarters brother, Sadler’s Wells, there is a stakes winner out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro (sire of Violence and Warrior’s Reward). Medaglia d’Oro is by El Prado, also sire of Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller, and Sadler’s Wells has also been represented in North America by Magician and Capo Blanco (both by Galileo), Powerscourt and Horse Chestnut.
Curlin is out of a Deputy Minister mare, but he and his sons has enjoyed exceptional success with inbreeding to that strain this already appearing in 30 stakes winners, five grade one. Out of mares by Awesome Again there are four stakes winners, including grade one winner Keen Ice, and Awesome Again is sire of Ghostzapper, Paynter, Oxbow, Daheer, Toccet, Awesome of Course and Awesome Patriot). Other Deputy Minister branches that could be used are Dehere (whose son, Graeme Hall, is broodmare sire of Curlin grade one winner Curalina), Forest Camp, French Deputy and Silver Deputy. There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Silver Deputy son Posse and other sources of Silver Deputy are Archers Bay, Badge of Silver and Spring at Last and Posse. Deputy Minister might also be introduced through Touch Gold.
The cross of Curlin and sons with mares from the A.P. Indy line has produced more than 30 stakes winners.  Elite Power is particularly interesting here as he is out of a multiple graded stakes winning mare who is bred on a cross of A.P. Indy’s sire, Seattle Slew over a Mr. Prospector mare, as are many of A.P. Indy’s most important sons. There are ten stakes winners out of mares by A.P. Indy himself, including Champions Malathaat and Nest, and grade one winners Idol and Global Campaign, as well as eight stakes winners, including grade one winners Paris Lights and Clairiere, out of mares by that horse’s son Bernardini (sire of Stay Thirsty and To Honor and Serve). There is also a graded winner by Curlin out of a mare by Majestic Warrior (bred on a very similar cross to the dam of Elite Power), and it could also be worth considering mares by Congrats (a brother to Flatter) and Mineshaft (sire of Dialed In – who is interesting here as he comes from Elite Power’s immediate family – and Discreetly Mine), Jump Start and Stephen Got Even. Curlin also has two graded stakes winners out of mares by Yes It’s True, whose grandsire Raja Baba is from the same sire line and family as A.P. Indy.
Curlin and sons are outperforming opportunity with mares from the Unbridled’s Song branch of the Fappiano line. That includes grade one winner Idomatic out of a mare by First Defence, and grade two winner Vegas Magic out of a mare by Rockport Harbor, and stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled Express, Old Fashioned, Even the Score and Eurosilver, with other possibilities including Arrogate (who will double Deputy Minster, a positive here), Liam’s Map, Midshipman, Cross Traffic, Songandaprayer, Half Ours, Graydar, Dunkirk and Will Take Charge.
Curlin already has two stakes winners, including grade one winner Collect, out of mares by Holy Bull, and he is sire of Macho Uno (broodmare sire of a Curlin grade one winner), Flashy Bull, Woke Up Dreamin and Giacomo. Curlin has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Indian Charlie, a son of In Excess. In Excess is also sire of Rocky Bar, Notional and Bring the Heat, and Indian Charlie is sire of Uncle Mo (sire of Nyquist, Laoban and Outwork), Adios Charlie, Bwana Charlie, Liaison and Cinco Charlie.

The distaff side of Mandaloun’s family shows a potent mix of some of the best of North American and European breeding. His dam, Brooch, was bred by Juddmonte and represents the third of three generations of Juddmonte-bred mares – all by Juddmonte stallions – in the tail-female line.
Trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld, Brooch went undefeated through her first four starts, taking a maiden by 9½ lengths, the Ruby Stakes, and the Denny Cordell Lavarack &amp; Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes (Gr.3) in an undefeated three-year-old season. Returning at four, she added the Lanwades Stud Stakes (Gr.2), scoring easily. It’s not surprising that the Racing Post concluded that “She has a great deal of class.”
Brooch is by Juddmonte homebred, Empire Maker, a Classic winner who had strong claims to being the best of his crop in North America at three. Empire Maker went on to become an extremely important sire, with 14 Grade 1 winners, including such as three-time Eclipse Award winner Royal Delta, and Pioneerof the Nile, sire of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, Classic Empire.
Brooch’s dam, Daring Diva, is by Champion Miler, Dansili, one of the most accomplished stallion sons of the legendary Danehill. Speedy and precocious, Daring Diva, gained a black-type win at two in the five-furlong Criterium de Vitesse. Dam also of the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Caponata, Daring Diva is a sister to Emulous, successful in the Matron Stakes (Gr.1), and to Group winner First Sitting.
The second dam of Brooch, Aspiring Diva, is out of the exceptional mare, Queen of Song, whose 14 victories included the Shuvee Handicap (Gr.2) and Sixty Sails Handicap (Gr.3). In turn, Queen of Song is a sister to Cormorant, who captured the Bay Shore Stakes (Gr.3), Gotham Stakes (Gr.2) and Jersey Derby (G1r.), and sired 1994 Kentucky Derby (Gr.1) captor, Go For Gin.
The family goes backed to a famed ancestress, the mare Balancoire II. Imported from France in 1918, she became a foundation mare for Harry Payne Whitney, and she is granddam of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney’s immortal “Chocolate Soldier” Equipoise, and third dam of one of racing’s most storied performers, Seabiscuit.

Mandaloun is a son of Into Mischief, the dominant stallion of the era. Into Mischief has enjoyed a remarkable career arc which, perhaps, most closely echoes that of his great-grandsire, Storm Cat.
Storm Cat would rise to become North America’s preeminent sire, for many years the most expensive stallion at stud on the continent. He would go on to take the Leading Sire title on two occasions, to earn an unprecedented seven titles as Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds, and to found a stallion dynasty which has reached its pinnacle with Into Mischief.
Into Mischief has not yet matched Storm Cat’s record number of Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds titles, although he is closing, as he’s lifted that crown four times in the last six years, and at time of writing, again heads the 2022 standings. He has, however, already eclipsed his sire’s total overall premierships, reigning as North America’s Leading Sire for the last three years, setting and resetting the all-time earnings record. He also appears to have a near uncatchable lead in the race for the 2022 title and is within reach of yet another earnings record.
A fourth title, and that with some of his best-bred crops yet to reach the racetrack, would confirm Into Mischief’s place alongside some of the giants of North American breeding history. In fact, in a span of more than 50 years – an era that included such as Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, Deputy Minister and Giant’s Causeway – no stallion has earned more than three Leading Sire’s titles. The last to do so was Bold Ruler who claimed the honor for the final time in his career in 1969, and before him, in the entire 20th century, only Star Shoot, Sir Gallahad III, Bull Lea and Nasrullah achieved that feat.
One of the fastest ever stallions to reach the 100 stakes winners mark, Into Mischief is now represented by 115 individual black-type scorers, 12 of them Grade 1. In addition to Mandaloun, they include Horse of the Year Authentic; Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Champion Sprint Female Sprinter Covfefe; Champion Female Sprinter Gamine; Canadian Champions Conquest Enforcer and Miss Mischief; and current grade one stars Life Is Good and Wonder Wheel.
Into Mischief is now beginning to carve out a career as a sire of sires. All three of his sons to retire to stud in Kentucky with runners have sired Graded stakes winners, and his two Grade 1-winning sons with starters are already Grade 1 sires. The two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Gr.1) victor, Goldencents led off with millionaires By My Standards and Mr. Money in his first crop, and is also sire of Going to Vegas, a grade one winner in 2021 and 2022, and Practical Joke has four Grade 1 winners from his first two years at stud, including this year’s Frizette Stakes (Gr.1) heroine Chocolate Gelato.
With Mandaloun and several other young sons yet to have runners, Into Mischief, looks set to extend his branch of the Storm Cat line well into the 21st century.

For a horse destined to show his best form over Classic distances, Mandaloun showed sharp speed at two, taking a six-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland on his debut, and following up with a victory in allowance company over seven furlongs at Churchill Downs.
A close third to Midnight Bourbon and Proxy in the Lecomte Stakes (Gr.3) on his debut at three, Mandaloun reversed the verdict with that duo when earning his way into the Kentucky Derby (Gr.1) with a daylight score in the Risen Stakes (Gr.2).
In the Derby itself, Mandaloun was always prominent, and stayed on strongly in the stretch to deny Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality – the champion of the crop at two and three – with Midnight Bourbon, Known Agenda and Rock Your World among those further in arrears.
Successful in the Pegasus Stakes on his next outing, Mandaloun made it three straight wins in the Haskell Stakes (Gr.1), he and the subsequently disqualified Hot Rod Charlie dueling to the wire, with the third home, Following Sea, beaten more than 18 lengths.
Sidelined from his Fall targets by a minor foot injury, Mandaloun reappeared at four to gain his fourth consecutive victory, defeating old rival Midnight Bourbon for the Louisiana Stakes (Gr.3), in the process running a career high 106 Beyer and career low 4 Ragozin Sheet number.
The second straight Kentucky Derby winner for his sire, Mandaloun retired having won at two, three and four, scoring over six, seven, eight and a half, nine and ten furlongs, his versatility, class and courage all firmly established.
