The distaff side of Mandaloun’s family shows a potent mix of some of the best of North American and European breeding. His dam, Brooch, was bred by Juddmonte and represents the third of three generations of Juddmonte-bred mares – all by Juddmonte stallions – in the tail-female line.
Trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld, Brooch went undefeated through her first four starts, taking a maiden by 9½ lengths, the Ruby Stakes, and the Denny Cordell Lavarack &amp; Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes (Gr.3) in an undefeated three-year-old season. Returning at four, she added the Lanwades Stud Stakes (Gr.2), scoring easily. It’s not surprising that the Racing Post concluded that “She has a great deal of class.”
Brooch is by Juddmonte homebred, Empire Maker, a Classic winner who had strong claims to being the best of his crop in North America at three. Empire Maker went on to become an extremely important sire, with 14 Grade 1 winners, including such as three-time Eclipse Award winner Royal Delta, and Pioneerof the Nile, sire of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, Classic Empire.
Brooch’s dam, Daring Diva, is by Champion Miler, Dansili, one of the most accomplished stallion sons of the legendary Danehill. Speedy and precocious, Daring Diva, gained a black-type win at two in the five-furlong Criterium de Vitesse. Dam also of the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Caponata, Daring Diva is a sister to Emulous, successful in the Matron Stakes (Gr.1), and to Group winner First Sitting.
The second dam of Brooch, Aspiring Diva, is out of the exceptional mare, Queen of Song, whose 14 victories included the Shuvee Handicap (Gr.2) and Sixty Sails Handicap (Gr.3). In turn, Queen of Song is a sister to Cormorant, who captured the Bay Shore Stakes (Gr.3), Gotham Stakes (Gr.2) and Jersey Derby (G1r.), and sired 1994 Kentucky Derby (Gr.1) captor, Go For Gin.
The family goes backed to a famed ancestress, the mare Balancoire II. Imported from France in 1918, she became a foundation mare for Harry Payne Whitney, and she is granddam of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney’s immortal “Chocolate Soldier” Equipoise, and third dam of one of racing’s most storied performers, Seabiscuit.

Mandaloun is a son of Into Mischief, the dominant stallion of the era. Into Mischief has enjoyed a remarkable career arc which, perhaps, most closely echoes that of his great-grandsire, Storm Cat.
Storm Cat would rise to become North America’s preeminent sire, for many years the most expensive stallion at stud on the continent. He would go on to take the Leading Sire title on two occasions, to earn an unprecedented seven titles as Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds, and to found a stallion dynasty which has reached its pinnacle with Into Mischief.
Into Mischief has not yet matched Storm Cat’s record number of Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds titles, although he is closing, as he’s lifted that crown four times in the last six years, and at time of writing, again heads the 2022 standings. He has, however, already eclipsed his sire’s total overall premierships, reigning as North America’s Leading Sire for the last three years, setting and resetting the all-time earnings record. He also appears to have a near uncatchable lead in the race for the 2022 title and is within reach of yet another earnings record.
A fourth title, and that with some of his best-bred crops yet to reach the racetrack, would confirm Into Mischief’s place alongside some of the giants of North American breeding history. In fact, in a span of more than 50 years – an era that included such as Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, Deputy Minister and Giant’s Causeway – no stallion has earned more than three Leading Sire’s titles. The last to do so was Bold Ruler who claimed the honor for the final time in his career in 1969, and before him, in the entire 20th century, only Star Shoot, Sir Gallahad III, Bull Lea and Nasrullah achieved that feat.
One of the fastest ever stallions to reach the 100 stakes winners mark, Into Mischief is now represented by 115 individual black-type scorers, 12 of them Grade 1. In addition to Mandaloun, they include Horse of the Year Authentic; Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Champion Sprint Female Sprinter Covfefe; Champion Female Sprinter Gamine; Canadian Champions Conquest Enforcer and Miss Mischief; and current grade one stars Life Is Good and Wonder Wheel.
Into Mischief is now beginning to carve out a career as a sire of sires. All three of his sons to retire to stud in Kentucky with runners have sired Graded stakes winners, and his two Grade 1-winning sons with starters are already Grade 1 sires. The two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Gr.1) victor, Goldencents led off with millionaires By My Standards and Mr. Money in his first crop, and is also sire of Going to Vegas, a grade one winner in 2021 and 2022, and Practical Joke has four Grade 1 winners from his first two years at stud, including this year’s Frizette Stakes (Gr.1) heroine Chocolate Gelato.
With Mandaloun and several other young sons yet to have runners, Into Mischief, looks set to extend his branch of the Storm Cat line well into the 21st century.

For a horse destined to show his best form over Classic distances, Mandaloun showed sharp speed at two, taking a six-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland on his debut, and following up with a victory in allowance company over seven furlongs at Churchill Downs.
A close third to Midnight Bourbon and Proxy in the Lecomte Stakes (Gr.3) on his debut at three, Mandaloun reversed the verdict with that duo when earning his way into the Kentucky Derby (Gr.1) with a daylight score in the Risen Stakes (Gr.2).
In the Derby itself, Mandaloun was always prominent, and stayed on strongly in the stretch to deny Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality – the champion of the crop at two and three – with Midnight Bourbon, Known Agenda and Rock Your World among those further in arrears.
Successful in the Pegasus Stakes on his next outing, Mandaloun made it three straight wins in the Haskell Stakes (Gr.1), he and the subsequently disqualified Hot Rod Charlie dueling to the wire, with the third home, Following Sea, beaten more than 18 lengths.
Sidelined from his Fall targets by a minor foot injury, Mandaloun reappeared at four to gain his fourth consecutive victory, defeating old rival Midnight Bourbon for the Louisiana Stakes (Gr.3), in the process running a career high 106 Beyer and career low 4 Ragozin Sheet number.
The second straight Kentucky Derby winner for his sire, Mandaloun retired having won at two, three and four, scoring over six, seven, eight and a half, nine and ten furlongs, his versatility, class and courage all firmly established.
