Steinem success in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes

Steinem doubled her tally of Group wins on Saturday with a win in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Sandown Lakeside, becoming Frankel's eighth stakes winner in Australia this season.

Steinem staged a solid effort in breaking through for her first win since taking out the 2021 Summoned Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield in winning at Sandown on Saturday. Having her first start since racing in Perth in December, she settled nicely back in fifth place (many lengths from the breakaway
leader, Deny Knowledge whose saddle had slipped). Jockey Johnny Allen brought her into the race with a well-timed move nearing the 300m, she hit the front at the 50m and held on for a very good win. Steinem benefited from a strong pace to win by a neck and hold off a late challenge from 2022 Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip.

Next up for the multiple stakes-winning mare is next month’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), a race that trainers Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace have targeted her at this preparation.
