Royal Ascot win for Juan Elcano

The son of Frankel earned his first blacktype win after powering to the front of the Listed Wolferton Stakes with half a furlong to go yesterday (15th June).

Taken from the European Bloodstock News, 16th June 2021:

The Kevin Ryan-trained four-year-old raced a little worse than mid-division as Victory Chime showed the way at a good clip. Racing into the final two furlongs, Patrick Sarsfield hit the front and began to pull away, but he was followed through by Juan Elcano, who swooped to the front at the half-furlong marker and ran on to score by a half a length. Solid Stone was two and a half lengths behind Patrick Sarsfield in third.

A debut winner at two, Juan Elcano was second in the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes and third in the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes. He was fifth in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas and third in the Gr.2 Dante Stakes at three, and was gelded at the end of the season.

Bred by David and Trish Brown at Furnace Mill Stud and a 360,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, the winner is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Hoppings Stakes winner Nkosikazi, out of Whatami. She is a full-sister to the Listed Chesham Stakes winner Whazzat, dam of the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes winner and Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest-placed sire James Garfield and grandam of the multiple US Gr.1 winner Uni. Whatami has a foal full-brother to Juan Elcano.

Frankel also registered a one-two in the final race of the day at Ascot with Amtiyaz and Dubious Affair battling for the win in the Copper Horse Stakes with Amtiyaz prevailing by a head.
