New stakes winner for Bated Breath

Bated Breath gelding Piz Nair stayed on strongly to win the Listed Al Methaq Mile in Bahrain on Friday (3rd April), continuing the fine form of joint trainers Daniel and Claire Kubler.

Taken from the European Bloodstock News, 4th April 2026:

Settled in third by jockey Abdulla Faisal as Bussento (Oasis Dream) set brisk fractions up front, Piz Nair was switched off the rail and began to make headway entering the final 400 metres. Athan briefly looked to have stolen a march on his rivals when hitting the front almost immediately afterwards, but his stride soon began to shorten, and he eventually faded into fourth. Piz Nair swept to the front around 100 metres from the finish and went on to win by three quarters of a length, with Hi Royal just pipping the winner’s stablemate Byline for second.

Bred by the Niarchos Family and originally trained by George Scott, Piz Nair was a 110,000gns purchase by SackvilleDonald at the 2024 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale. He began his career in Bahrain with Allan Smith, winning four times last season, and has continued to excel for the Kubler team this term, who began training for the Bahraini royal family last year. Now five years of age, Piz Nair is one of two winners out of the Galileo mare Lovee Dovee, a winning half-sister to the Listed Prix des Lilas heroine Maria Gabriella (dam of the Listed Prix de la Californie winner Mariafoot and grandam of the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner and sire Marianafoot).
