Megallan strikes with second Group victory

The four-year-old Kingman colt dominated his rivals in the Gr.3 Cazoo Diomed St. at Epsom, adding to his victory in last term's Gr.3 Sovereign St. at Salisbury.

Four-year-old Kingman colt Megallan ran second in Newmarket's Apr. 12 Gr.3 Earl of Sefton S. on seasonal bow, but was transmitting early distress signals when finishing a 12-length third going an extended 10 furlongs in Chester's Gr.2 Huxley St. last month.
Megallan was well away and was in front after the initial strides. Holding sway thereafter, the 9-2 chance was stirred into action when threatened with three furlongs remaining and kept on relentlessly under a drive inside the final quarter mile to hold Godolphin's Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) by a length in ultimately snug fashion.
"He didn't handle Chester at all and he can throw the odd bad race in here and there, but when he's on song he is a tough horse," said Frankie Dettori. "We knew he stays a mile well, we went good fractions and I was trying to simulate my hero Steve Cauthen, who's here, to show that I have learnt a bit since he retired. I've been riding here 35 years and, only when it is very soft do we go to the middle to top [in the straight. The ground is on the slow side of good today, there's a fresh strip [on the far side] and I proved I was right. We tried a mile-and-a-quarter
with him and it didn't work out, so now we'll have to stick around a mile or nine furlongs. I am sure John [Gosden] will make a plan."
Gosden added, "He ran very well in the [Gr.3] Earl Of Sefton [at Newmarket] where he was beaten by a good horse then he went to Chester where it didn't work out. They went flat out, the ground was very testing and he didn't enjoy it. He didn't get the trip. He has not really been frustrating as he won the Group 3 at Salisbury last year. We will look at a Group 2 over a mile for him and that will be the plan as he has a Group 3 penalty now. We will look all over for one of those and that might be in France or that might be in England."
