Mazzala masters his elders in the Prix de Reux

Unbeaten in three starts before tackling the older horses in Saturday's Gr.3 Prix de Reux, the son of Frankel continued the fine start to the Deauville August Festival for the Wertheimers, winning by a length and a quarter.

Last seen taking Vichy's Listed Prix Frederic de Lagrange in July, the Yann Barberot-trained homebred appreciated this extra half furlong to get on top with a true staying effort and score by a length and a quarter from the solid yardstick Parachutiste. This is one of the four races which offers the winner entry into the Caulfield Cup, but Barberot has less testing targets in mind  for the gelding.

"He has surprised me a little, because he is still very tender and is doing this on class alone. He's going to improve a lot again next year and he is only three-year-old, so I don't want to cut corners with him. If I let myself be tempted by a race, it will be the [Gr.2] Grand Prix de Deauville at the end of the meeting."

Mazzala's dam Celtic is a daughter of the American Oaks and Del Mar Oaks heroine Lady Of Shamrock, who has produced the Prix Chloe winner Blush (Kingman) and Frankel's Prix de l'Avre scorer and Prix du Lys third Martel.
