Listed win for Bated Breath's Surabad
Bated Breath three-year-old Surabad won the Listed Prix de l'Avre at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, the first blacktype win for The Aga Khan homebred.
Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 28th April 2025:
Francis Graffard trainee Surabad was successful in two of his four prior starts, finishing third in the other two, and stepped forward to justify odds-on favouritism and secure a career high in this blacktype bow. Stalking the tempo in second for the most part, he delivered his challenge in early straight and was not for catching once gaining an advantage with 350 metres remaining to comfortably repel the late threat of Croquis.
"He is a very brave, consistent colt and always tries his best," said owner's representative Nemone Routh. "He has a lovely temperament and is probably the sweetest horse in the stable. He is a shade lazy though and lacks a proper turn of foot. He is the sort that lengthens rather than quickens. The aim today was to benefit from the free supplementation to the [Gr.1] Grand Prix de Paris, so it is mission accomplished. Whether or not he runs between now and then is a question I am unable to answer at present."
Surabad, who becomes the 28th black-type winner for his sire, is the third of five foals and lone scorer from three runners out of a multiple-winning half-sister to Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage third Saryshagann (Iffraaj). The February-foaled homebred bay is kin to the unraced two-year-old filly Little Havana (Oasis Dream) and a yearling colt by Sealiway and hails from the family of multiple Group 1-winning sire Sendawar.
