Fifth Group 1 win for Alpinista

Five-year-old Frankel mare Alpinista maintained her seven race winning streak with success on the Knavesmire in the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks - her fifth successive Gr.1 win.

Kirsten Rausing's homebred disposed of esteemed rivals in last month's Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on her seasonal return and maintained her winning streak with a decisive success in a stellar edition of the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks at York today (18th August).

Successful in the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin, Gr.1 Preis von Europa and Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Bayern last year, she became trainer Sir Mark Prescott's first domestic Group 1 winner since Marsha in 2017. The grey mare's second dam, Albanova, rattled off the same trio of German Group 1 triumphs in 2004 and Alpinista embellished her record with a fifth straight elite-level triumph in the 12 furlong test at York.

Sir Mark Prescott had voiced pace concerns beforehand but his worries were assuaged as Gr.1 Pretty Polly winner La Petite Coco and Gr.1 Irish Oaks heroine Magical Lagoon disputed a solid tempo up front with Alpinista positioned behind in a stalking third. Urged closer once in the long home straight, she went to the front approaching the quarter-mile marker and was driven out in the closing stages as Epsom's Gr.1 Oaks winner Tuesday gave vain chase. Alpinista held a one-length advantage at the line with La Petite Coco staying on well once headed to finish a length and three-quarters further adrift in third.
