Columbus becomes a new Group winner for Oasis Dream
Racing on the front end, Columbus (Oasis Dream) took the Gr.3 Prix du Lutece at Longchamp for trainer Christophe Ferland in the colours of Gregor Baum, Ecurie Elag, Meridian International and Ecurie Nininoe.
Taken from the European Bloodstock News, 2nd September 2024:
Drawn on the inside, he tracked Chartwell, who led at a steady pace before Kalet snuck up the inside to challenge for the lead. The latter suffered an injury as they approached the business end and, while Chartwell kept going gamely, Columbus had too much pace and won going away.
Back in third, Shamarkand did enough to repel Hamavi, who had to settle for fourth.
Columbus was a winner on debut at Deauville last November, his only start at two. He posted a pair of third-place finishes at Chantilly and Longchamp and ran his only disappointing race at Baden-Baden in the Gr.3 Derby-Trial. He bounced back from that lack-lustre effort with another third in the Listed Prix Frederic de Lagrange and earned a second career victory prior to today’s success in the Listed Prix Michel Houyvet on his next start.
The BBAG September Yearling Sale graduate was bred by Brümmerhof and reoffered at the Arqana May Breeze-Up sale, where he was sourced by his current connections. Staying unusually far for a son of Oasis Dream, he is out of the Gr.3 Bronte Cup third Cribbs Causeway, which goes some way to explaining his stamina, and is from the family of the Gr.1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Coronet.
