Chaldean colt tops day 1 of September Yearling Sale

Hugo Palmer, with Michael Owen and bloodstock agent Ed Sackville, saw off spirited opposition to get the day’s highest priced offering of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, Lot 231, for €210,000, a colt from the first crop of Chaldean.

Taken from the European Bloodstock News, 23rd September 2026:

The colt is the first foal out of a two-year-old winner who is a full-sister to Listed winner and Gr.2-placed juvenile Sam Maximus. Rathbarry bred and sold the colt.

“The three of us thought he is an incredibly nice colt,” said Sackville. “I think anytime you have what you perceive to be a nice horse you have to expect to pay”.

Palmer added: “What excites me about Chaldean is that he, like Frankel, was a champion two-year-old."

Rathbarry's Paul Cashman added: “I didn’t see that coming! With the interest we thought he might make six figures, but I didn’t think he’d make ‘double’ six figures! There were some great people on him and I am delighted with where he is going. We bought the mare for 70,000gns and covered her with Chaldean. What a first foal and he has always been a strong individual. It is a lovely cross”
