Blacktype success for Skellet in the Fortune Stakes

Kingman filly Skellet claimed her first Listed win in the Fortune Stakes at Sandown yesterday (18th September).

Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 19th September 2024:

TDN Rising Star Skellet, unsuccessful in four blacktype starts since attaining that accolade last year, went post-ward for this coming back off a second in Chantilly's Gr.3 Prix Chloe in July and regained the winning thread with a victory at Sandown. Positioned under cover in seventh after the initial exchanges, she was angled to the outside for a clear passage soon after passing the three-furlong pole and kept on strongly once shaken up approaching the final furlong to make a blacktype breathrough by a neck from Checkandchallenge.

"Ralph [Beckett] was satisfied with her all year, but he just didn't feel she was glowing," said Juddmonte's Barry Mahon. "I sensed, in the last few weeks, she was really coming forward and was in a good place after her break. She showed today that she remains a filly with potential."

He added: "Whether she remains in training or not, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's a filly that could progress a bit more at four. She's a big filly, she's very angular and I think there's a little bit more to come. She likes cut in the ground, she ran in France the last time and ran well so we know she handles the travelling so it would be no surprise if there was something back out there for her."
