Bated Breath filly joint top lot on day 1 of foal sales

The Bated Breath filly, bred by Yvonne Jacques of Carisbrooke Stud, sold for 80,000gns on the opening day of Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Taken from The Racing Post, 24th November 2022, by James Thomas:

For the majority of the session on day one of the sale, the market was led by a daughter of Bated Breath from Carisbrooke Stud who brought 80,000gns from Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock, who signed the docket alongside Wardley Bloodstock.

The filly is out of Naqaawa, a Shadwell-bred daughter of Shamardal who ran fourth in the Listed John Musker Stakes in the colours of Carisbrooke’s Yvonne Jacques. The dam, a 180,000gns purchase through Brian Grassick Bloodstock, is out of the Cheshire Oaks winner Hammiya and therefore a sibling to the German Listed scorer Shaqira and the Listed-placed Adhwaa, who is better known as the dam of this year’s dual Group 3 winner Alflaila.

“She’s a beautiful filly from a very good farm,” said Goff. “It’s a lovely back pedigree too and she had loads of class and quality. The stallion has had another good year too. She could be raced or she could come back to the sales next year, we’ll see how she progresses through the year.”

Goff revealed his purchase had been made on behalf of Rupert Gregson-Williams.

Breeder Yvonne Jacques commented: "She is by Bated Breath and I am breathless." When asked to expand on her reasons for selecting the Juddmonte sire Bated Breath for Naqaawa's second mating, Jacques, who was with advisor Cathy Grassick, said: "The Shamardal/Danehill cross has worked really well, Hello Youmzain is bred on a similar cross. It was important to give the mare a solid start with a proven horse."
