Adayar gives Frankel his first Derby

Godolphin homebred Adayar became Frankel's third British Classic winner and 14th Gr.1 winner when storming to victory in the Derby at Epsom, with fellow Frankel colt Hurricane Lane in third.

Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 5th June 2021:

He was the third-string of Godolphin, the outsider of all the colts by Frankel, drawn in the hoodoo one stall and ridden by the jockey who was banished from one of the more-fancied horses, but Godolphin's Adayar was out on his own at the end of Saturday's Gr.1 Cazoo Derby at Epsom.

Runner-up in the Gr.3 Sandown Classic Trial and the Lingfield Derby Trial, the powerful bay was positioned in fourth early by Adam Kirby who just days before was booked to ride John Leeper (Frankel) and who was put in the saddle ahead of Oisin Murphy. Making his move up the inner to grab the lead with two furlongs remaining, the 16-1 shot stayed on strongly to issue a 4 1/2-length beating to the Richard Hannon-trained 50-1 outsider Mojo Star, with the winner's stablemate Hurricane Lane (Frankel) 3 1/4 lengths away in third.

"He's a great big, scopey horse by Frankel and time will benefit him still. To win the way he has done, he's stamped his authority there among the three-year-old middle-distance horses," said trainer Charlie Appleby.
